Mitt Romney (my favorite for the Republican nominee in '08) is on the cover of the most current Newsweeek. The article examines Romney's upbringing and shows his struggle to portray himself as the turn around artist of the 2002 Winter Olympics and not as the Mormon candidate. The authors paint a picture of a hard working, disciplined, analytical, and bright person. Romney is shown to be very principled, but at the same time cognizant that he must connect with voters on shared values to overcome the liability of his religion. Not an easy thing to do, but I think as the average Republican voter gets to know him (as they have in New Hampshire and Iowa), he will gain ground on Rudy and Thompson. I'd like to see him run with Mike Huckabee as VP. Huckabee would help shore up the southern and evangelical vote.

Yes,a movie I rented when I lived in Michigan and never returned. Not very good, although Mark Wahlberg is great in it as a firefighter who rides his bike to fires.
A couple of clarifications seem worthwhile here. I think many folks would consider Mormonism a cult, and Joseph Smith a false prophet. Romney recently admitted to having performed baptisms of the dead in the past, which is out there if you ask me. Romney's religious beliefs are no small matter for his electability.
Also, the Newsweek article concluded that "the politician Romney has been chiefly interested in organizing and packaging himself into is a a man who seems to have no history, and, as a result, no heart". So I guess I got something a little different out of that article.
Anyone who wants to double the size of Guantanamo Bay won't will not be getting my vote, I can guarantee that.
Finally, he's spent way more in New Hampshire and Iowa than anybody else thus far. It will be interesting to see how he fares there once the other candidates actually start campaigning in those states.
I agree that Mormonism is a cult, so I think that is a big negative for Romney. However, as far as morals, etc, what's most important to me is what kind of Supreme Court justice he would nominate. Romney would nominate one that would uphold the Constitution and not legislate from the bench, while a Hillary nominee would be an activist judge that would uphold the "constitutional right" to kill unborn children.
The doubling of Guantanamo comment was clearly an appeal to the conservative base, and I loved it. Lock up more terrorists and keep them there, off the battle field and out of our airplanes and schools.
Romney has spent a lot of money in NH and Iowa, the first two Republican primary states. This is the traditional way to win the nomination. Giuliani is basically giving these states away, hoping he'll clean up in New York, Florida, California, etc. Thompson doesn't seem to be doing to well in these states. I think Romney's strategy is a good one. Bottom line, I want a conservative who can beat Hillary. Right now I think Romney's the best bet.
